History of Qalyubia

 The Pharaonic era: In the Pharaonic era, Qalyubia was located in the tenth region of Lower Egypt, and its capital was called (Hat / Hurri / Ait), meaning a castle in the middle of the land because it was in the middle of the southern part of the delta, so its name in Greek was (Atrebes) and in Coptic (Atrib or Tel Atreb). The most prominent son of Qalyubia in the Pharaonic era was Amenhotep of Hesbo, who rose until he took over the reins of affairs in ancient Egypt during the decade of Amenhotep III, who honored him and allowed him to establish a funerary temple for himself next to the Pharaoh’s temple and under his coffin and engraved with royal inscriptions similar to the coffins of kings.

The Ptolemaic and Roman era: In the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, Qalyubia was the city of Atrebes and the capital of one of the governorates of the eastern Delta. It is located to the northeast of the city of Banha at Tell Atrebes. Atrebes was a large agricultural, industrial and commercial center.

The Islamic era: In the Islamic era, Qalyubia belonged to the province of Al-Sharqiya, and in the year 857 AH 1351 AD, Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun issued a decree separating it from Al-Sharqiya and considering it a province under the name Al-Amal Al-Qalyubia, in reference to the city of Qalyoub, which he made its capital. In the year 933 AH 1527 AD, it was named a state. Qalyubia, then the Qalyubia Municipality. In the year 1833 AD, it was named Qalyubia District, and its base was the city of Banha. In 1960 AD, it was named Qalyubia Governorate, and the city of Banha remained its capital.
